Route map

Jo’s favourite cycling routes are all within the long hard route shown on this map. The whole 65 miles would be a tough day in the saddle, but this region offers great shorter rides as well.

We were not rude enough to ask Jo if his favourite cycling routes include taking on  the Buttertubs. For those new to the area, the cycling route from Masham up to the Leyburn area is a delight. This qualifies as one of our favourite cycling routes for social riders, with enough hills to get some work done. We issue this stark warning though; the unfit should turn back here !

In contrast the climb over from Leyburn to the Dales Bike Centre is tough. The stop for coffee and cake to recharge the batteries at the Dales Bike Centre is pretty much a must for all but the insanely fit. However, this is as nothing compared to the climb back out of Swaledale from Thwaite over to Hawes. Grown men have been found in tears. If the savage hill climbs do not get you, the wind will. Buttertubs is one to tick off, but get some miles and some hills into those legs before you take it on.
